The word "trot" is usually used to describe the way a four-legged animal walks: it's faster than a walk, but slower than a run. For example, when a horse moves at a trot, its front legs move forward together, then its back legs move forward together, and it does this motion in a smooth, rhythmical way. Apart from talking about animals, "trot" can also be used to describe the way people run, or the act of running in a light, bouncy way that is less strenuous than full-on running. Additionally, you might hear someone say they are "going for a trot" when taking a leisurely walk or walk/run for exercise. So, the word "trot" can be used when describing the way animals walk, people run, or when someone is doing a light form of running for exercise.
