The word 'feudal' refers to a type of society that existed in Europe during the Middle Ages. In a feudal society, the king or queen would give land to wealthy nobles in exchange for their loyalty and military service. These nobles would then give some of their land to smaller landowners, who would work the land and give some of their crops or goods back to the noble in exchange for protection. This system was very hierarchical, with those who owned more land having more power and influence. Today, 'feudal' is often used to describe any social or political system that is strongly hierarchical and based on unequal distribution of power and resources.
