Pentecost is a word that is commonly used by Christians to refer to an important religious holiday. It is celebrated seven weeks after Easter, and marks the day when the Holy Spirit came down to Earth and appeared as tongues of fire on the heads of the apostles. Pentecost is also known as the birthday of the church, as it marks the day when the apostles began to preach the message of Jesus to people of all nations. Outside of religious contexts, 'Pentecost' may also refer to the coming together of people from different nations and cultures, or a celebration of diversity and unity. For example, a school might hold a 'Pentecost festival' to showcase the different cultures and traditions of its students. In more general contexts, however, 'Pentecost' is not a common word and is primarily used in religious settings.
