An embankment is a man-made structure or a natural ridge that is built or formed at the side of a river, canal or road to prevent flooding or to hold back water. It is like a wall-like structure that is usually made of soil, rocks or concrete. Embankments can also be used to create higher ground for railways, highways or buildings. For example, when you walk or drive on a road that is elevated above the level of the surrounding ground, you might be crossing an embankment.
