A ravine is a narrow, steep-sided valley formed by erosion (when the earth is worn away by water or wind). It's a place that is much deeper and narrower than a typical valley or canyon, and it often has sharp cliffs on either side. You might see a ravine in a forest or mountainous area, where water has worn away the earth over time to create a narrow gap in the landscape. People often use the word "ravine" to describe a gorge or a chasm, like the Grand Canyon in the United States.
