The word "alibi" is used to describe a defense that someone uses to prove they were somewhere else when a crime was committed. For example, if someone is accused of stealing something from a store, they might say they were at home with their family at the time and have proof of it, such as a witness or a receipt. This is known as their alibi. The word can also be used more generally to mean any excuse or explanation for why someone is not guilty or responsible for something they are accused of.
