The word 'recessive' is used in biology to describe a trait that is not seen when a dominant trait is present instead. For example, if a child inherits a dominant gene for brown eyes from their parent, they will have brown eyes even if they also inherited a recessive gene for blue eyes. This means that the blue eye gene is hidden or not expressed because the brown eye gene is dominant. We also use the word 'recessive' in genetics and heredity to describe the passing on of traits from parents to children. If both parents carry a recessive gene for a trait, there is a chance that their child may inherit it. However, if only one parent carries the recessive gene, there is a lower chance of the trait being expressed. Outside of biology and genetics, 'recessive' can be used to describe something that is hidden or not obvious. For example, a recessive personality trait might mean that someone is shy or introverted, but this isn't immediately apparent to others.
