A friar is a member of a religious group, usually from the Roman Catholic Church or the Anglican Church. They live a simple life, taking vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience. You might see a friar walking around town in a long brown robe, perhaps carrying a book or a rosary. Friars can be found in monasteries, convents, and other religious communities where they devote their lives to prayer and helping others. You might also hear the word friar used to describe a character in a story or play, such as Friar Laurence in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet.
