The term ‘enabler’ generally refers to a person or a thing that helps or supports someone else to continue doing something that may be harmful or negative. In simpler terms, an enabler helps someone to continue a negative behavior or habit. For example, if someone has a drinking problem, and their friend keeps buying them alcohol, then the friend is an enabler. They are supporting and continuing the bad habit of drinking excessively. Similarly, if a parent continuously gives money to their adult child who is addicted to gambling, then the parent is an enabler. It's important to identify enablers in negative situations and try to avoid the influence of these individuals. An enabler can allow someone to continue with their bad habit or even worsen it, instead of helping them change it for the better.
