The word 'scapegoat' is used to describe a person who is blamed for something that they did not do. It is often used when someone is unfairly blamed for something bad that has happened, and they are made to take responsibility for the actions of others. For example, a boss might blame an employee for a mistake that was actually made by the whole team, in order to avoid taking the blame themselves. The term 'scapegoat' comes from an ancient Jewish tradition, in which a goat was symbolically burdened with the sins of the community, and then driven out into the wilderness.
