The word 'profit' is often used in business to talk about the money that a company makes after subtracting the costs of producing and selling its products or services. If the company's revenue (the money it makes from selling its products or services) is higher than its expenses (the money it spends making the products or providing the services), then it has made a profit. For example, if a bakery makes $100 in a day from selling bread, but it has to spend $50 on flour, eggs, and other ingredients, then it has made a profit of $50. This extra $50 can be used to invest in the business, pay off debts, or distribute to shareholders. In everyday conversation, 'profit' can also be used more broadly to describe any situation where there is a benefit or gain. For instance, you might say that you 'profited' from an opportunity to learn a new skill, because it improved your resume and helped you get a better job.
