Backhand is a term mostly used in sports like tennis, badminton, and squash. It is a type of shot that is played by hitting the ball with the back of the hand when the hand is facing away from the body. In other words, it is the opposite of a forehand shot, where the ball is hit with the palm of the hand facing the body. For example, in tennis, a player may use a backhand shot to return a ball hit to their left side. Outside of sports, backhand can also refer to a critical or sarcastic remark made by someone towards somebody.
