Joule is a unit of measurement that is used to measure energy. It is named after the scientist James Prescott Joule, who discovered the relationship between heat, electrical and mechanical work. You might hear the word joule used in science classes or when talking about energy consumption. For example, the energy used by a light bulb can be measured in joules. If someone says "the battery has 500 joules of energy," they mean that the battery has the potential to do 500 units of work.
