A counterclaim is a response to someone's claim or argument that goes against what they are saying. It is used in situations where two people or groups are disagreeing with each other and each has their own position. For example, if someone says that sugar is good for you, someone else might counterclaim and say that sugar is actually bad for your health. In a court case, a defendant may make a counterclaim against the plaintiff's claims. By making a counterclaim, you are asserting your own argument and trying to show why the other person's argument is not correct.
