A meniscus is a curved surface that forms on the top of a liquid when it is in a container. It looks like a little curve or a small hump on the surface of the liquid. You may have seen it when pouring water into a glass or when you fill up a bowl with soup. It's important to know about the meniscus when measuring the volume of a liquid, since measurements should be taken at the bottom of the curve, where the liquid level is lowest. The word 'meniscus' can also be used in medical terminology, referring to a cartilage that acts as a cushion in the knee joint.
