A barnacle is a small crustacean animal that lives attached to hard surfaces, such as rocks or ship hulls, in saltwater environments. The word can also be used metaphorically to describe a clingy person who is difficult to get rid of or an unwanted feature that is hard to remove. For example, a ship that has been inactive for a long time may have barnacles attached to its hull, which can cause drag and slow it down. Or someone who constantly tags along with a group of friends, even when not invited, could be described as a "barnacle."
