A scriptorium is a room or a building where monks, scribes, or scholars used to copy and illuminate manuscripts by hand before the printing press was invented. It usually had desks, benches, and shelves filled with books and writing materials. Scriptoriums were often found in monasteries, universities or other institutions of learning during the medieval times. Today the term is sometimes used to refer to a room where books are written or where manuscripts and archives are stored.
