The word 'secularist' refers to a person who believes in separating religious beliefs from the affairs of the government and society. In many countries, there is a separation between the church and state, which means that religious beliefs should not influence the decisions made by the government. Someone who supports this idea is considered a secularist. For example, someone who believes that schools should not teach any one particular religion, but rather present a neutral view on all religions, would be considered a secularist.
