A transept is a section of a church that crosses the main part of the building. It forms the arms of a cross shape. The transept is located perpendicular to the nave, which is the long, central part of the church. Transepts can be found in various styles of churches, including Gothic, Romanesque, and Byzantine. They are usually used for additional seating, as well as to highlight important features such as altars or chapels.
