The expression "after the event" is used to talk about when something has already happened. It can also mean that it's too late to do something about it or to change it. So, for example, if you forget to bring an umbrella and get wet in the rain, you could say "I wish I had brought an umbrella, but it's too late now, after the event." Or, if you hear about a party that happened last night but you weren't invited, you could say "I wish I had known about the party, but now I can't go since it's already after the event."
