If someone is "ahead of the game", it means they are doing better than expected or are prepared for what's coming. For example, a student who studies regularly is ahead of the game on test day. On the other hand, if someone is "behind the game", it means they are not doing as well as expected or are not prepared for what's coming. For example, a runner who starts training a week before a race is behind the game compared to someone who has been training for months.
