The expression "but for" is used to express a hypothetical situation where something did not happen or exist, and how it would have affected the outcome if it did not. It is often used to show a cause-and-effect relationship. For example, "But for the rain, we could have gone for a picnic" means that if it did not rain, we would have been able to have a picnic. Another example is, "But for her timely intervention, the accident could have been worse" means that her intervention helped prevent the accident from being worse.
