The expression "by a nose" is used to describe a very close victory or defeat, especially in horse racing. It means that someone or something won or lost by a very small margin, just like how a horse can win a race by a very small distance, often just by the length of its nose. For example, if two athletes are competing in a race and one of them wins by just a fraction of a second, they can be said to have won "by a nose."
