The expression "crocodile tears" is used to describe someone who is pretending to be sad or upset but is actually insincere. It comes from the belief that crocodiles shed tears while eating their prey, which many people now believe is not true. We use this expression when someone is showing fake emotion to get sympathy or gain an advantage. For example, if someone is crying at a funeral of someone they didn't care for, we might say "don't believe her crocodile tears."
