The word 'lay' is used to refer to putting something down, usually flat on a surface. For example, you might 'lay' a book on a table, or 'lay' your clothes out flat to dry. It's important to remember that 'lay' is the past tense of 'lie', which means to recline or be in a horizontal position. So, you might 'lie' down on your bed to take a nap, but if you got up and put a blanket on top of yourself, you would 'lay' the blanket on top of you. It's different from 'lie', which means to tell an untruth. So, if someone asked you if you 'lay' down for a nap, you would say yes, but if they asked if you 'lied' down, that would be incorrect because 'lie' doesn't have a past tense that means to put something down.
