The expression "leave the field clear for somebody" means to give someone a chance to do something without any competition or obstacles. It can be used in situations where you want to show support for someone and encourage them to succeed without any interference from others. For example, if two employees are competing for a promotion, one might say to the other, "I'm going to leave the field clear for you and not apply for the promotion myself." This means that they won't stand in the way of the other person's success and will let them have a better chance of getting the promotion.
