The expression "rest/sit on your laurels" means to be satisfied with your past success without doing anything else to continue improving or achieving more success. It is usually used as a warning to someone who has achieved something great, but is not doing anything else to improve or move forward. The expression comes from the ancient Greek practice of awarding laurel wreaths to victorious athletes, which were then worn on their heads as a symbol of success. If an athlete became too content with their past victory and stopped trying to improve, they were said to be "resting on their laurels."
