To "run the gauntlet" means to go through a difficult or challenging experience that involves facing a series of obstacles or being criticized by a group of people. The term originally comes from a punishment given to soldiers where they would be forced to run between two rows of their fellow troops who would hit them with sticks or other objects. In modern usage, it might refer to a situation where one faces criticism from a group of colleagues or must navigate a difficult situation with a lot of scrutiny. For example, if a new employee has to present a proposal for the first time to their boss and a group of senior executives, they may feel as though they are running the gauntlet because they are worried about the presentation going well and being able to defend their ideas.
