"Swing the lead" is an old English saying that means someone is pretending to be sick or injured in order to avoid doing work. It's often used in a joking way to accuse someone of being lazy or faking illness to get out of work. For example, if a co-worker calls in sick for the third time in a month, someone might say "Oh, he's just swinging the lead again." This expression is not used very often nowadays, and may not be understood by everyone.
