The expression "there’s many a slip ’twixt cup and lip" means that something may seem certain or likely to happen, but it can still go wrong. Just because you seem to be near success, you're never actually there until it's done. This phrase can be used in situations where there is still a lot of uncertainty or danger involved, even if things seem to be going well. For example, if you’re about to win a race, but you still have to cross the finish line, there’s still a chance you could trip and fall, lose your momentum or someone might overtake you unexpectedly. It's a warning to not count your chickens until they’re hatched.
