The expression "these things happen" is used to acknowledge and accept that unexpected or unpleasant events can occur in life, and that they are not necessarily anyone's fault. It is often said to show sympathy or understanding towards someone who has experienced a difficult situation, or to reassure oneself that there is nothing to be done about an unfortunate event. For example, if someone is upset because their flight has been delayed, you might say "I'm sorry, but these things happen sometimes. Let's try to make the best of it."
