"Throw the baby out with the bathwater" means to get rid of something valuable or important while trying to get rid of something else unnecessary or undesirable. It comes from the old times when people would bathe in a large tub and, since hot water was scarce, the eldest person would bathe first, followed by the younger family members, and finally the baby, who would be bathed in the most dirty water of all. So if someone threw out the dirty water without checking if the baby was still in the tub, they would be throwing out the baby as well. This expression can be used to caution against making a hasty or careless decision that might result in losing something important or valuable.
