The expression "at first glance" is used when you are talking about something that seems a certain way when you first look at it or experience it, but may actually have more to it. It means that your initial impression of something may not be entirely accurate. For example, if you see a person who looks unhappy, you might say "At first glance, that person seems sad, but maybe they're just tired." Or, if you read the first chapter of a book and don't like it, you could say "At first glance, this book doesn't seem very interesting, but maybe it gets better later on." So, "at first glance" is a way to acknowledge that something might not be exactly what it appears to be, and to encourage people to keep an open mind and look deeper into things.
