The expression "make bricks without straw" means to try to accomplish something without the necessary resources or materials. This expression comes from the Biblical story in which the Israelite slaves in Egypt were forced to make bricks without being given the straw needed to bind them together. As a result, they had to work much harder and create weaker bricks. In modern usage, the expression is used to describe situations where a person is trying to achieve something with inadequate resources or support.
