The expression "on a wing and a prayer" is used to describe a situation where someone is trying to achieve something difficult, but has very little chance of success. It comes from the idea of a damaged airplane trying to make it safely to the ground by relying on the last remaining wing and the pilot's prayers. You might use this expression to describe someone who is studying for a test, even though they didn't start preparing until the night before. They may feel like they are "on a wing and a prayer" when taking the test because they didn't have enough time to prepare properly.
