"The brass ring" is often used to describe a goal or a prize that someone really wants to achieve or obtain. It comes from an old carousel (an amusement ride) where there were rings that riders would try to grab as they went past on a rotating arm. The rider who grabbed the only brass ring would win a special prize. So, when someone talks about going for "the brass ring," they mean that they are going after a big prize or goal that they really want.
