The word 'arrest' means to take someone into custody or to stop them from moving. It is used by law enforcement officials when they detain someone who has broken the law. You might hear this word being used when a police officer places handcuffs on somebody who they suspect has committed a crime. The word 'arrest' can also be used in non-law enforcement contexts, such as when an object or process is halted or interrupted. For example, if a construction project is halted due to safety concerns, it could be said that the work was 'arrested'.
