A lieutenant (pronounced lef-tenant) is a rank in the military, usually in the army, navy, or air force. It is a position of authority that is above a sergeant and below a captain. In civilian life, the rank of lieutenant is also used in some professions, such as the police force and fire department. In everyday conversation, it may also refer to a deputy or assistant to a leader, such as a company lieutenant who helps the CEO.
