Regency is a word used to describe a period of time in English history. Specifically, it refers to the time when George IV was ruling as Prince Regent (a stand-in for his father, who was too sick to rule) from 1811 to 1820. During this time, there was a certain style of fashion, architecture, and culture that was popular, and this is what is referred to as the Regency era. It is also used to refer to the government system where a regent rules temporarily in place of a monarch who is incapable of ruling.
