"Etiology" refers to the cause or origins of something, usually a medical condition or disease. It is used by doctors and scientists to understand why a particular illness or condition occurs, in order to develop effective treatments or preventions. For example, the etiology of a cold might be a virus, while the etiology of heart disease might be a combination of genetics and lifestyle factors. Outside of medicine, "etiology" can also refer to the origin or history of something, such as the etiology of a cultural tradition or a social norm.
