Octave is a musical term used to describe a distance between two notes. It means the distance between one note and another note that has double (twice) or half the frequency of the first note. It is mainly used to describe the different ranges of notes used in music, especially in singing. For example, if you sing a note, and then sing the next highest or lowest note that is exactly twice or half the frequency of the first note, you have moved an octave up or down. Octaves are commonly used in playing the piano, guitar and other musical instruments, and they can also be used in music composition and production.
