The word 'pilgrim' is used to describe a person who goes on a religious journey to a special place, such as a holy site or a shrine. The journey may be taken as an act of pilgrimage, which involves going on a long, difficult and meaningful journey to a destination of greater spiritual significance than one's usual environment. For example, a Muslim who goes to Mecca for pilgrimage is called a pilgrim. Nowadays, the word 'pilgrim' can also be used to describe anyone who travels to a place for a particular reason, such as to explore new cultures or to do charity work.
