The word ‘tolerate’ means accepting or enduring something that you do not like or agree with. For example, you might not like the taste of a food, but you tolerate it because you don’t want to be rude to the person who cooked it. Similarly, you might disagree with someone’s opinion, but you tolerate it because you respect their right to have their own opinion. Tolerate can also mean to allow something to happen without trying to stop it, for example, a person might tolerate the noise from construction work because they know it will end soon.
