Diffraction is a word that is used to describe how light waves, sound waves or water waves can spread out and change direction when they pass through a small opening or around a barrier. For example, if you shine a flashlight through a small hole, you may notice that the light appears to spread out and create a fuzzy pattern on the other side. This is because the light waves are diffracting around the edges of the hole. Diffraction is also why you can hear sounds around corners or see the edges of objects through a narrow gap. Scientists and engineers use diffraction to create things like holograms, lasers, and lenses that can focus light into specific patterns.
