Croft is a term used in Scotland, Ireland and England to refer to a small piece of land traditionally used for farming. Crofts were often small plots of land located near to a farm, and were used to grow crops and keep animals such as chickens, cows or sheep. The term is also used in relation to small farmhouses or cottages situated on these plots of land. The word 'croft' can often be seen in place names, such as in the Scottish Highlands where it is common to see the term 'croft' in the name of a village or town.
