A meteor is a piece of rock or metal that enters the Earth's atmosphere and burns up, creating a bright streak of light in the sky. When this happens, people often call it a shooting star, although it's not actually a star. Meteors are usually very small and burn up completely before they can reach the ground. It's a fun thing to see, especially during meteor showers, which happen when a lot of meteors pass by at once.
