Hydra is a word that refers to a mythical creature in Greek mythology that had many heads. When one head was cut off, two grew in its place, making it nearly impossible to defeat. Today, the word hydra can be used in a metaphorical sense to describe a problem or situation that seems to have many interconnected parts and is difficult to solve. It can also refer to a genus of freshwater polyps that share this creature's ability to regenerate body parts, specifically their tentacles. In everyday conversation, you might hear someone say, "Dealing with this project is like fighting a hydra - every time I solve one issue, two more pop up in its place," or "I saw a hydra in the pond during my hike today!"
