The word 'anaerobic' is used to describe something that happens without air or oxygen. For example, when you exercise really hard and your muscles start to hurt, that's because they are doing anaerobic exercise - they're not getting enough oxygen. Anaerobic bacteria are microbes that can live and grow in environments where there is no oxygen, such as deep in the earth or in our guts. In science, anaerobic reactions are chemical reactions that happen without oxygen. So, if you hear the word 'anaerobic' it usually means something that happens without oxygen.
